Weekend Recap
/The weekend looked like there wouldn't be any (too) surprising team results, but a lot of very intriguing matchups between individuals. Some of these we didn't get to see, but we did have a few. Injuries and illness are a factor for everyone. Unfortunately, college coaches seem more likely to hold kids out of big matches (especially when the dual score isn't close) that may really affect their seeding in March. This isn't great for the fans, but at least it prevents teams like #3 Ohio State blanking Michigan State in East Lansing. Here are a few of the duals and interesting results from another great wrestling weekend.
Speaking of which the Ohio State split squad defeated Sparty on Friday night. Their starters were 6-0 and their backups were 0-4. This shows the lack of depth on their roster and a couple injuries in March could seriously hurt their title chances more so than Iowa or Minnesota.

Iowa defeated Illinois 25-12 with some fireworks. Zane Richards (Illinois) was able to avenge his Midlands finals loss to Clark 6-5, Isiah Martinez (Illinois) continues to go beast mode with a huge 21-6 tech of Kelly, and 174 backup Alex Meyer (Iowa) got a defensive fall with one second left in the match to upset #6 Brunson. I was a little surprised the struggling Dziewa (Iowa) was able to be Rodriguez.

Rutgers defeated Maryland for their first ever Big Ten win. They have a pretty decent team this year. Scott DelVecchio (Rutgers) upset the struggling Geoff Alexander (Maryland) 10-4. For the Terps we see the return of Spencer Myers from his Football season. He started off with a nice 5-3 win over ranked Billy Smith.

Ohio State defeated Michigan 25-15 with both teams missing some starters. There were some great matches here though. Struggling Brian Murphy (Michigan) entered the weekend not ranked for the first time in college. He then defeated #6 Demas 5-2. #6 Bo Jordan (Ohio State) rode #10 Taylor Massa all second period and got the escape in the 3rd to win 2-0. #10 Domenic Abounader (Michigan) defeated #12 Kenny Courts 6-2. #5 Kyle Snyder for the 2nd time defeated #8 Max Huntley this time with a 5-2 decision. Huntley had not wrestled since the Southern Scuffle so the silver lining for Michigan fans is to see him back healthy. I really wish we would have seen Hunter Stieber vs Alec Pantaleo, but Stieber was out again this weekend. It's already late January and Hunter is yet to get his season on track.

After losing to Purdue on Friday (Coach Ersland is awesome), Northwestern defeated Indiana 37-9. The anticipated match of #4 Taylor Walsh vs #7 Pierce Harger for the 3rd time this year was certainly the main event. Walsh had won the first two by pins from lefty headlock. Harger though won this one by tech fall 15-0. That is certainly a shocking result and we hope to have the video soon of this. It's not all that surprising Harger won, but 15-0 is pretty crazy. Walsh only had two losses on the season before this and that was to #2 Sulzer (Virginia) 4-2 with two very controversial situations and #3 Isaac Jordan (Wisconsin) 3-1.

Minnesota edged Illinois 20-19. We didn't get to see undefeated freshman Isiah Martinez (Illinois) wrestle #1 Dylan Ness since he was out with the flu. #1 Chris Dardanes (Minnesota) was losing to #5 Zane Richards 7-1, but Dardanes stormed back to force overtime and then win 12-10 in an early match of the year candidate.
