Michigan Goes 3-0 at NE Duals
/The Michigan Wrestling team had a great (official) start to the season with three dual wins at the Northeast Duals in Troy, New York on Sunday taking down West Virginia, Hofstra, and Sacred Heart.
19th ranked West Virginia, a surging program with Coach Sammie Henson, was going to be Michigan's big test of the day. The Wolverines were able to win seven of the matches on their way to a 21-12 win including a nice win for Max Huntley over #8 Jacob Smith 5-3. Conor Youtsey dropped the other top ten matchup of the dual to Zeke Moisey. Youtsey had a chance to rideout Moisey for the win, but multiple stall calls gave Moisey the match. The new rules that are arm twisting refs in to calls were very apparent in this match.
Davonte Mahomes struggled to a 1-2 day. The stall rules were used against him in both matches when it appeared he was just trying to counter a single leg. However, Mahomes layoff coming off of injury appeared to hinder the performance ability we know is possible. Every year we see different wrestlers struggle in November so it's very foolish to push any panic buttons at this point.
At the MSU Open, Logan Massa was competing unattached and won the 165 lb bracket in dominant fashion including a first period pin over Welch (Purdue) in the finals. I think Massa will continue to wrestle unattached through the Southern Scuffle and then Michigan will have an interesting decision on their hands. Of course, Garrett Sutton is an incredible luxury to have here as he went 3-0 on the day at the NE Duals.
Also at the MSU Open, Austin Assad (125) & Jackson Striggow (197) won their freshman/sophomore brackets in impressive fashion.
#4 Michigan hosts #14 Oklahoma on Sunday in what should be a great dual with some high ranked matches. We will preview it later this week.
