Mahomes Out For Season
/For the second year in a row, Davonte Mahomes (Michigan's 174) will have his season ended with an ACL tear. Mahomes was in the first period in the Penn State dual with Bo Nickal when he tweaked his knee while defending a single leg.
Mahomes was bursting on to the scene early last season as a true freshman before the injury. The silver lining was that the injury was early enough to still get a redshirt making him a Redshirt Freshman this season. Mahomes is currently ranked 13th and after a slow start to the season he was really making strides showing he was a serious All-American contender.
Losing a potential All-American is a serious blow to Michigan heading in to the conference and NCAA tournaments as Michigan hoped to place high as a team in both. Joe McFarland will turn to Aaron Calderon a Redshirt Sophomore from Brighton, Michigan. Calderon wrestled at 165 in the MSU Open and 157 at the Alma Open. He is 7-4 on the season, but is 2-1 filling in for Mahomes in Big Ten duals so far. Calderon is a gamer of sorts and will certainly give all he has as that has been on display during making the most of this opportunity.
Many expected Taylor Massa & Davonte Mahomes to create a log jam of sorts heading in to this season. Due to an elbow injury and other factors, Massa has never really got going this season and is not expected to see any matches in the 2015-16 season.
We hope Mahomes has a speedy recovery and is back for next season as Michigan only has two seniors in their formidable lineup while welcoming in to the fold Logan Massa & Stevan Micic, possibly the #1 & #2 current redshirts in the country.
