Juniors Put on Show
/Mark Hall and Logan Massa looked to have a rematch of the 13-11 thriller from the Olympic Trials that really didn't get enough mention as one of the best matches of the weekend. Massa seemed determined as ever striking first on a single leg, following his impressive 10-0 tech of Valencia (Arizona State). Instead, Hall hit the headlock roll to catch Massa on his back for the fall and the Most Outstanding Wrestler award.
This match was just part of the impressive display of wrestling talent and entertainment value throughout the day. Stars were all over the place looking to set themselves up for the Junior World Team. It was also a nod to the freestyle rules that have a lot of action making low scoring one takedown matches a very rare occurrence.
The other most talked about final was when Zahid Valencia (Arizona State) took out reigning NCAA Champion Myles Martin (Ohio State) 7-0. Valencia seems to have Martin's number winning four matches to none over the Buckeye.
Michigan had a strong showing capped by Alec Pantaleo winning the 66 kg title over fellow Bloodround favorite Matthew Kolodzik (Princeton). Three other Cliff Keen guys made the finals including Massa, Ben Freeman lost his final 8-8 on criteria at 63 kg, and Myles Amine fell at 79 kg.
Of course, Iowa fans were grinning from ear to ear looking at the results. New commit, Spencer Lee seemed to only wrestle for about 20 seconds the whole tournament. This year's redshirted Michael Kemerer won the 70 kg title. Gavin Teasdale took 2nd losing a razor thin match with Daton Fix.
