Iowa Tops Michigan

With Michigan starting seven freshmen, the #2 ranked Iowa Hawkeyes took eight matches on their way to a 31-7 win over the young Wolverines.

There were four decisions in the dual, with four of them going to Iowa.

At 133, Stevan Micic was a tough opponent for #1 ranked Cory Clark's first match of the year. In the second, Micic appeared to get a reversal putting Clark on his back. Clark quickly got under the leg causing the ref to never give points for Micic resulting in a rideout of the whole 2nd period. The final score was just 2-0.

At 141, in my opinion Carton is underrated but coming off placing at the Midlands. Profaci is a scrappy freshman who went out and got the first takedown and tested Carton in many positions but was unable to capitalize.

At 157, Kemerer continues his undefeated season with a win over an All-American Brian Murphy. Murphy got the first takedown as well but Kemerer was able to win a pivotal 3rd period scramble to put the match away.

At 174, Michigan was able to get one back as Myles Amine defeated his third All-American in his freshman season. Meyer was able to make it interesting after a quick locked hands call, but a reversal in the third period gave Amine enough to hold on. Amine is making a serious name for himself for someone nobody was planning on before the season. Afterwards Coach McFarland said that his ceiling was sky high and we are nowhere near seeing the best of him.

At 197, Wilke beat Striggow in a battle of unranked guys. Neither was able to create many angles, but Wilke beat Striggow in a couple scrambles to put the match away.

Neither team walks away from this one feeling wonderful. Michigan felt they could have won a couple more of the swing matches, giving away matches late. Iowa's issues that they need to overcome to contend for Big Ten & NCAA titles. As a fan though, it was plenty enjoyable anytime the Iowa train rolls into town.
