Northern Iowa Shocks Missouri to Win MAC
/On Sunday, it was expected that Missouri would host a dual and take some pictures afterwards as they have their third straight title. Missouri left the Big 12 for the SEC three years ago forcing the Tigers to find a new home. They came into the MAC and the surging program has out-classed the conference leading to Sunday's expectations. Northern Iowa had other plans.
UNI took 7 of the 10 matches to not only best Missouri, but give them a an unexpected 25-10 beating.
The first surprise came when #9 Max Thomsen took out #2 Lavion Mayes 9-2. He kept Thomsen at bay and then finished on his own shots in the third to pull away.
His roommate #11 Bryce Steiert decided it was his turn. #6 Daniel Lewis got the takedown but during a scramble Steiert locked up a cradle and eventually got the pin.
With Missouri's resources, it's seemed they have been a far step ahead of the rest of the MAC, a conference with some great programs but they are little brothers in large part to other programs in their state. While I don't hold any ill regard to Missouri, it's nice to know that they won't win every title until eternity.
