Michigan Rolls Wisconsin, Minnesota

In battling the other northern Big Ten schools, Michigan took 15 out of the 20 matches in route to defeating Wisconsin & Minnesota. The team scores looked good, but they suffered some upsets along the way as well.

Friday night, Michigan hosted Wisconsin and somehow heavyweight was drawn to start the dual. 40 seconds later the dual was 6-0 with a Coon pin. It was actually Coon's 2nd throw of the match but the first throw he was able to roll through it. Another pin that got the home crowd fired up was when Malik Amine hit an inside trip in the first period and then transitioned to a front underhook to put Stickley away at the 2:20 mark. That actually had the Wolverines leading 22 to negative 1 at intermission (team point deducted at 141).

Michigan would suffer two upsets on the backside though. Both Pantaleo and Beazley had very similar matches. They were finishing a single when knocked off balance giving up a takedown. They chased the rest of the match with stall calls coming too little too late. This is a probably a good time for homer disclosure.

The maize and blue boarded a plane for MSP to take on the Gophers Sunday and Malik Amine continued his good weekend with an upset win over #16 Bleise. (Again homer glasses here) but it was 0-0 match when Amine got hit for a penalty of going against the knee while riding legs, a call you rarely RARELY see in college wrestling.  However, about two seconds after the restart Amine threw in a leg and caught a cradle on the far side for four points. Another upset would come for Michigan when freshman Drew Mattin took out last year's NCAA finalist Lizak in sudden victory.

Michigan's lone setback came Logan Massa appeared to have the match in hand getting the first three takedowns over #10 Wanzek, but when trying a claw ride tilt Wanzek caught him on his back for six. In only his second match coming back from injury, mounting the comeback required more horsepower than he had built back up yet.

Another ranked match-up happened at 133 but instead of a close match, Micic locked up a nasty near-side cradle while looking to finish a takedown and earned the 2nd period pin.

Michigan travels to the belly of the beast on Saturday with a 6pm eastern match against Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Several top matches will make this a can't miss dual for many reasons.
