Midlands Ends With Stunner of Rivera over Lee

The 125 lb weight class appeared to be Spencer Lee (Iowa) and the field, but the 56th installment of the Midlands Wrestling Championships saw the host’s Sebastian Rivera (Northwestern) dominate the defending champion and phenom to a 7-3 win in the final. It wasn’t a stolen, one takedown match. Rivera scored early from distance and never allowed Lee to get to his pace.

Princeton has their first two champions in program history. Kolodzik had to fend off what was probably the toughest weight class to defend his #1 ranking. Brucki keeps showing in his sophomore campaign that he now has the physicality and the experience to hang with anyone.

Iowa won another team title showing off impressive depth, but some holes in the armor proved to be a less than optimal performance.

Northern Iowa ended up with two champions of their own. Several developing programs impressed as Northern Iowa and Princeton have made it very plausible that they show up to any event with multiple champions and an impressive hardware haul.

There is a lot to digest from this one, but another Midlands was the gift from the Wrestling gods we needed as we head into January and the heart of the collegiate wrestling season.
