U23 World Team is Set

One of the more fun tournaments of the year has been University Nationals, which has been essentially replaced with U23. With Europeans having trouble not trying to pass bearded men with Cadet level, identifying "University" was a bridge too far. UWW has decided to go with U23 and that has become an exciting tournament to watch. 

There are several reasons for this as the event becomes a college age open. From high school seniors to JUCO/NAIA/NCAA all levels each year produces a large quantity of interesting results. 

Buffalo's Alex Smythe is this year's Cinderella story. He was a 2-time state placer who had three seasons around 500 in the Win/Loss columns. He finally redshirted last season and took to the mats in Akron with a new found polish taking out breakout star Evan Wick (Wisconsin) in the finals. 

In Michigan news, Austin Assad and Drew Mattin were both in the 57 kg with a healthy Assad having a much better weekend. Assad had his best high school accolades on the fresstyle circuit while Mattin is an accomplished mat wrestler. They reportedly had split challenge matches before Assad was injured and had to miss the college season forcing Mattin out of redshirt. The battle for next year's 125 could be close. 

The development of Youssif Hemida (Maryland) continues. The big man wins himself a title and with graduation hitting 285 hard, it'll be nice to see Maryland with a guy in the mix for a top five finish again.
