Michigan Starts 2019 with Pair of Dual Wins

Michigan started the new year by travelling to the west coast for a pair of duals at Oregon State and Arizona State on Thursday and Saturday. A pair of wins, a big reveal, and some tough defeats highlighted the trip.

First and foremost, after an impressive run showing the improvement needed to get big wins over top heavyweight contenders, Head Coach Sean Bormet couldn’t wait anymore to unleash Mason Parris. It was quite a time to do so, a couple thousand miles away and against the top returner from last year, #1 ranked Dhesi. Parris didn’t waste any time getting two takedowns in the first minute and didn’t let up adding a couple more for an eventual 11-4 win. Parris was also needed against Arizona State, and he came up with a pin for not only imperative bonus points but also a much needed momentum swing. Parris will likely be ranked in the top ten giving the Wolverines a boost that could see them go from top five to top two.

In a head scratcher, Pantaleo wrestled up at 157 after debuting back at 149 at the Midlands. However, with a west coast trip with lots of travel (even Oregon is not exactly next to Arizona) this move could have been team sacrifice more than long term strategy. Massa also lost his matchup to #5 Shields, and once again Myles Amine was unable to knock off defending champion Valencia (who has only lost two matches in college).

Striggow, Storr, and Micic won both their matches on the trip flexing the depth of Bormet’s squad and ability to absorb tough losses and still win duals.

Michigan will host Illinois in Crisler Center on Saturday at 7pm.
