NYAC Bill Farrell Was a lot of Fun
/Every year the tournament in New York in November provides some interesting freestyle matchups and results. However, this year the field was much more prolific than the past. With the spots up for grabs as we essentially enter the last leg of the Olympic cycle, the talent was deep and the action was fun.
There were a lot of interesting moments to hit on but to keep this from being a novel I'll post the results and some quick points. Track Wrestling has the complete brackets. Of course, we will have plenty to talk about on this week's podcast episode.
College kids showing up and doing work. One of the more interesting parts of freestyle & greco is what young guys step up and compete and then what ones don't. The heavyweight titles were won by guys who will go back to training folkstyle on Monday with Nick Gwiazdowski winning freestyle and Adam Coon winning in greco. Nathan Tomasello and Stevan Micic also had impressive tournaments that are not expected against a strong field of senior level guys.
Outside of having to mount a comeback to beat Micic, Tyler Graff was completely dominant in a loaded bracket. It was a strong showing and Graff keeps improving on the freestyle circuit.
Jordan Oliver has a knack for winning matches against everyone that isn't Brent Metcalf. Logan Steiber and Frank Molinaro looked incredible, but then JO beat Molinaro 4-4 and Steiber 8-5 in the finals.
Kyven Gadson was interesting to watch. He seemed uncomfortable choosing when to pick his spots despite having success when he was the one causing the action. It'll be interesting to see him get more senior level experience in the next few months. Despite a 1-2 showing I still think it'd be foolish to count him out.
It was good to see Julia Salata back competing and working hard to a 4th place finish. She is coming off a couple injuries and looked good especially considering the long layoff.
