USA Just Short of World Cup TItle

USA's Freestyle Wrestling team fell in the finals to host Iran 5-3 in a thrilling dual in a packed arena in remote Kermanshah.

The World Cup started in 1973 as mostly a goodwill relations exhibition of sorts. Since the event in 2006, when Iran & Russia really started taking the event seriously, the competition has become a full battle for wrestling supremacy. It's a battle USA hasn't had much success at with this week being only the second time USA reached the finals (since 2006) in this modern era.

USA stormed out of the gates in pool play dominating Georgia, no easy task. That momentum carried over with tough wins over Russia and Azerbaijan.

The finals saw several close matches not go America's way leading Iran to a 4-0 lead, including James Green losing 2-0 on two shot clocks (cough...cough). Jordan Burroughs stepped onto the mat in the biggest spot for the first time since his disappointing Olympics. He gave up the first takedown to the 2015 Asian champion, but then rallied back for the 3-2 win.

David Taylor's matches, as a result of Team USA's draw heading into this week, meant that 0-4 would've been understandable. Instead, he took a 3-0 record into the finals facing the 2016 Olympic Gold medalist. David Taylor continued to attack the 86 kg opponents with low attacks and a furious pace. He gave up three pushouts with two cautions to start the match as Yazdani pushed with his underhook. However, Taylor got three takedowns with a pace higher than his opponent could keep up with leaving his legs split with the last takedown. Taylor climbed up his back and Yazdani gave up giving up the pin.

Kyle Snyder would win his match before Gwiazdowski would fall to the Olympic Bronze Ghasemi 5-0.

Jordan Burroughs & David Taylor both went 4-0 with beyond impressive performances this week.

It was a great showing from Team USA as the American roster continues to improve top to bottom before the World Cup returns to the states in 2018 at Iowa City for a can't miss event.
